Port Aurel writer Nadia Farouk has won the national prize for a first book with her collection of stories, "Low Tide".

The twelve stories are set in the streets around the old fish market, where Farouk grew up. The judges called the book "funny, sad and full of the smell of the sea".

Farouk, a former nurse, wrote most of the stories on night shifts. She will read from the book at the central library next week.
