Port Aurel handled a record 1.8 million containers last year, up 12 per cent, as two new cranes cut the time ships spend at the quay by almost a third.

The port authority said the growth came mainly from short-sea routes along the coast, which have picked up as some freight moves off the roads.

The authority plans to hire 140 more people over the next two years, most of them in maintenance and logistics. Training places will be offered first to people who live within five miles of the port.
