Port Aurel University has opened a £22 million research centre for clean energy on its waterfront campus.

About 120 researchers will study how to generate electricity from the tides in the estuary and how to store energy in the old dock basins, which could act as giant batteries.

The estuary moves more water every day than every river in the region put together. We want to know how much of that we can use.

— Professor Ines Duarte, director

The centre will hold open days for schools and the public, starting next month.
