The six-month trial would cost £1.1m and start in the new year.

All council-run buses in Port Aurel would be free on Saturdays and Sundays under a six-month trial announced by the mayor on Monday.

The trial would cost £1.1 million and be paid for from parking income. The mayor said it was meant to bring shoppers back to the centre, where footfall is still below its level of five years ago.

Business groups welcomed the idea but asked for more buses on the busiest routes. The transport union said drivers must not be expected to cope with larger crowds without extra staff.

Councillors will vote on the plan next month.

I live two streets away and nobody from the council has knocked on our door.
